“The Catch” Throws It Down
David Tyree, former New York Giants wide receiver, is probably best remembered for his catch in Super Bowl XLII that helped the Giants beat the undefeated Patriots in a fourth quarter nail-biter. But now he is back making waves in another clutch situation of our age.
“Liberal” Arts
On April 29th of this year, the newly formed “One Wheaton” group passed out a letter to Wheaton students addressing the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) student at Wheaton with these words:
Dear Wheaton Students,
The recent chapel message on Sexuality and Wholeness and surrounding conversations may have left some of you feeling alienated, ashamed and afraid.
The Words We Say
I listened to this broadcast again yesterday by the White Horse Inn and thought I would share it with you all. They mentioned, among other things, that the words we use need to be defined for this generation to prevent ambiguity and possibly heresy for future generations in the church. There is a lot of talk these days about “living the gospel” or “being the gospel,” as if we ourselves are the good news. Some even say that the church is an extension of Christ’s incarnation, as if Jesus came to provide the moral example or template for us to complete. Here is another insightful broadcast by the White Horse Inn. Enjoy!
Christians Say “Om”
This issue has come up several times in conversation with other Christians. Should Christians practice yoga? I admit that at one point during college I tried to empty my mind while contorting my limbs into a deep stretch. I viewed it as a harmless exercise craze that was supposed to help me relax and focus on the upcoming Anthropology test. But, over the years, and with more education, I have learned that yoga is much more than exercise. It is a form of worship to Hindu gods. But, telling this fact to a Christian practicing yoga comes with much resistance.
Ordo Salutis & Grace Abounding To The Chief of Sinners
I came across John Bunyan’s, “A Map Showing The Order and Cause of Salvation” on Resurgence. It is worth studying!
In addition, here is a selection from John Bunyan’s autobiography, “Grace Abounding To The Chief of Sinners: In a faithful account of the life of John Bunyan, or a brief relation of the exceeding mercy of God in Christ to him; namely, in taking him out of the dunghill, and converting him to the faith of His blessed Son, Jesus Christ.“
The Purpose-Driven Interview
Here is the full interview between John Piper and Rick Warren. The purpose of the interview, in the words of Piper, “is to bring out and clarify what Rick Warren believes about these biblical doctrines, ” especially as they are written in Warren’s book, The Purpose-Driven Life. The doctrines Piper referred to are those of sanctification, salvation, the gospel, imputation, propitiation, hell, evangelism, inerrancy, repentance, and the doctrines of grace.
“Letting Herself Go” Debate
In his most recent post, “Letting Herself Go,” Tim Challies responds to blogger Rachel Held Evan’s article entitled, “Thou Shalt Not Let Thyself Go?” The original article by Evans discussed this idea that if a woman let’s herself go the husband has grounds to cheat.
“The message is as clear as it is ominous: Stay beautiful or your husband might leave you. And if he does, it’s partially your fault. It was this message that inspired me to devote the entire month of February to studying everything the Bible says about women and beauty.”
Ligonier Teaching Fellows Answer Your Questions
In the recent months, questions have arisen over the inerrancy of Scripture, the end of days prediction by Harold Camping, the P.C.U.S.A. stance on Homosexuality, and the issue of hell. In this video, R. C. Sproul sits down with the Teaching Fellows of Ligonier Ministries to address these topics as well as questions over dispensationalism, evangelism, and election. As usual Sinclair Ferguson, Robert Godfrey, Steven Lawson, and R. C. Sproul Jr. get to the heart of each issue without compromising the infallibility of Scripture and the saving work of Christ.
Hell: We can’t afford to get it wrong.
Below is Francis Chan’s video response to Rob Bell’s book Love Wins. Chan’s book entitled Erasing Hell: What God Said About Eternity, And The Things We’ve Made Up, published by David C. Cook, will be released July 5, 2011.
Lyrical Preaching
Not since Maranatha! and contemporary praise emerged from Chuck Smith’s Calvary Chapel in the 1970s has a genre of Christian music become so associated with a specific stream of evangelicalism. And while not all Christian rappers are Reformed, nor do all see themselves as preachers and teachers working in a musical medium, the growing edge of the movement is explicitly taking its cues from Calvinist leaders.
